Breathtaking. The idea of taking, or losing, one’s breath.
When something as gorgeous as Cinque Terre pops out of the Mediterranean in front of you, it takes your breath. I hope these photos can share just a bit of that with you!
“The Five Lands” is composed of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (trust me, Wikipedia says so ;-))
Julie, Melissa and I hopped a boat from La Spezia – a gorgeous city in its own right! We explored the adorable harbor and yummy seafood with local friends, and we gawked at the massive black boats belonging to Armani. And then we were off to adventure!
We enjoyed the boat ride all the way to the farthest village of Monterosso, and then we hiked about an hour and a half along THIS coastline back to the village of Vernazza. b r e a t h t a k i n g . . .
Vernazza is so full of color and life, even as it still recovers from a massive flood in 2011. Truly a magical place to wander and photograph.
We hopped the regional train for our ride back to LaSpezia, and eventually back to our apartment in Florence. It was a short weekend, and I was just getting over a stretch of migraine headaches, but Cinque Terre leaves a most beautiful mark on my time spent in Italy this spring. A place that takes your breath away, and inspires you to breathe all at the same time!
I will come back in a separate post to tell you about a special little place called Porto Venere as well…
