Spring is certainly in the air, and I gotta admit to being totally surprised to remember all the crocus bulbs I planted last year! They exploded in the early-spring sunshine and warmth!
I was so happy to spend a recent morning among the spring growth at Cape Cod Organic Farm. I grew up just down the road from this farm, which used to be run by the Sheriff’s department as a way to educate and occupy the hands of our more “behaved” inmates. It was awesome to get a full tour of the land in its modern day, and learn about what Tim Friary is growing and who he’s supplying (Whole Foods!) in addition to their own CSA.
This collection of photos shows the brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage and other leafy goodness that’s starting to rise higher in the greenhouses.
I also got to meet the farm flock (I left with two dozen eggs just for coming by) and a gorgeous pig full of personality, Delila.
In addition to your more common vegetables, Cape Cod Organic Farm will be growing beach grasses and shrubs, adding a public blueberry picking section, and keeping up with their big pumpkin patch. They chickens are laying eggs, and Delila will only ever be used for breeding. Also something to keep an eye on, the farm is currently installing a state-of-the-art composting system! I love hearing stories like these so close to home. I look forward to visiting more in the coming months!
